Head has played professionally since 1995 and has two victories on the Ladies European Tour: the 1999 Ladies Italian Open and 2001 South African Open. Four times she has finished in the Top 25 on the LET Order of Merit - 1999 (21st), 2000 (10th), 2001 (14th) and 2003 (23rd). Head has had exempt status on the LET for more than a decade, but also spent three years (2003-05) playing primarily on the Japan LPGA, where she recorded numerous Top 10 finishes. In 2006, she played 14 times on the Futures Tour with five Top 10 finishes. Her twin sister Johanna is a member of the LPGA Tour.
The Golf Channel says:
You may ask why someone like Samantha Head needs a "Big Break"? After all, she plays professionally worldwide and has won three events on the Ladies European Tour.
So really, why "Big Break Ka'anapali"?
"I auditioned for the show to get an LPGA Tour exemption," said the Ascot, England, native. "I feel I have had a pretty successful career in Europe and Japan. I'm not your typical girl who hasn't played on a professional tour. I just haven't made it to the LPGA."
Head has been close before. The last three years she competed in the finals of the LPGA's qualifying tournament only to be denied each time.
While making it to the LPGA would be satisfying to Head, an added bonus would be joining her sister Johanna, who has played on the tour since 2001.
The twins, who were born seven-and-a-half minutes apart, took up golf after their grandfather introduced them to the game when they were 13 years old. The duo practiced together on the driving range for two years before actually playing on a course. Eventually, the Head girls turned pro at the same time and both qualified to play on the Ladies European Tour in 1995.
"She (Johanna) had a little more success as an amateur," said Head. "It's funny how it worked out that when we turned professional I had the first win. It was nice to be the first one to win out there."
Comparing twins is inevitable, especially when they are in the same profession. With Johanna playing on the LPGA - the missing piece in Samantha's solid resume - it would be easy to say one career has been better than the other.
Of course, success is subjective.
